We teach the ASA National Plan for teaching swimming ” the journey through aquatics” which starts with a foundation programme developing early years water confidence.

Children start with our “Parent and Baby” sessions and pre-school sessions.

Did you know your child develops their basic movement range during the ages of 5 years to 8 years for girls and 6 years to 9 years for boys. During this stage of growing up children should be taking part in activity that builds their FUNdamental movement skills, with the emphasis being learning through FUN.

There are 7 stages in the earley “journey through aquatics”

Stage 1   developing basic safety awareness, basic movement skills and water confidence. Swimmers will still use arm bands, floats etc.
Stage 2   developing safe entries to water, including jumping in, basic floating, travel and rotation unaided to regain upright positions. Still with the aid of floats and arm bands.
Stage 3   developing safe entries including submersions, travel up to 10 metres on front and back, progress rotation skillsand water safety knowledge.
Stage 4   developing and understanding the of bouyancy through a range of skills, refining kicking technique for all strokes, and swimming 10 metres to a given standard as directed by the ASA.
Stage 5   developing watermanship through sculling and treading water skills, and complete rotation, also performing all strokes to the given standard as directed by the ASA.
Stage 6   developing effective swimming skills including coordinated breathing, developing the water safety aspects and understanding of preparation for exercise.
Stage 7   developing quality stoke technique up to 100 metres incorporating skills learnt and combining them to develop a linked routine and complete successfully an obstacle course that combines a variety of skills accomplished throughout stages 1 – 7.

Your child is now a competent swimmer and will go on to enjoy swimming for life.

Friends of Troutbeck Bridge

The Troutbeck Bridge Swimming Pool needs your support.
LIFE at Troutbeck Bridge have embarked on an ambitious fundraising programme for next year, being initially supported by their major stakeholder, South Lakeland District Council, who have pledged £12000 towards next years operational costs of the LIFE Centre.

Fundraising during 2011.  “Friends of Troutbeck”

LIFE which stands for Lakeland Initiative for Fitness and Excellence are a “non for profit” Charitable Leisure Trust and operate the Troutbeck Bridge Swimming Pool ( seen above ) this teaches 750 local children to swim every week, through the schools swimming programme and the Amateur Swimming Association Swim Club programme which takes place every afternoon between 4.00pm and 5.30pm  Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings.

As a Charity organisation LIFE have to raise £50,000 every year to keep the pool open to cover it’s operating costs. In previous years SLDC have been the main sponsor providing this generous support, but due to the national economic cut backs less money is available for funding this year.

Rising to the challenge LIFE have launched a building fund seeking to raise £500,000
to modernise the facilities at Troutbeck Bridge. A new 50 station gym will be built at first floor level with a Vibro Studio and additional dry side locker rooms. The ground floor swimming pool changing rooms will be modernised and the Club Lounge and Reception Area will also be fully refurbished.

LIFE plan to build this new extension over the summer months to Open Autumn 2011.

The increase in revenue generated by these new facilities will provide an additional £50,000 per annum income and will sustain the LIFE Centre going forward and protect the future of this valuable community facility.

A new state of the art gym is to be built at first floor level, which will include new                  CV equipment , resistance equipment, freeweights and a stretch area. There will                 be an independant Vibro Studio including three vibro plates as seen below :

A Vibro Plate offers a full body workout in just 20 minutes.

We are seeking support from local organisations to carry us over the next 12 months on our ambitious rebuilding programme. We need your generous support in order to survive and grow for the future.

If you can help in any way then please contact David Howell the Managing Director of LIFE who will be pleased to discuss the project with you, you can contact David direct on 01539 443243 or e mail david@life-wellbeing.co.uk.

Below are the architects visuals of how the LIFE Centre could look in the future with your support. All contributions will be gratefully received however large or small and will be used to boost the Charity funds of the “Friends of Troutbeck” to preserve the future tradition of swimming at Troutbeck Bridge.

Lake swimming with LIFE.

In October British Olympic swimming legend Duncan Goodhew dropped into LIFE at Troutbeck Bridge on his way to Scotland. Having missed out this year swimming in Windermere Lake during the Great North Swim cancelled due to algae in the lake over the weekend of the 6th September when some 8000 swimmers were due to compete in the Great North Swim sponsored by British Gas.
Duncan asked if some of the Troutbeck Lake swimmers would accompany him on a swim in the lake.
The call went out on facebook at lunchtime for experienced swimmers to join Duncan at Miller Ground Windermere for this impromtu swim and by 3.00pm the assembled team had joined Duncan ready for the half mile swim.
This was mid October and the lake swimming season had already ended at the end of September, the temperature in the lake drops rapidly from October onwards and temperature of the lake on this day was just 12 degrees so wet suits were necessary.

Afterwards there was time for a photoshoot with Duncan holding one of the Troutbeck Bridge Swimming Club hats.

Here is Duncan preparing for his swim in Windermere lake.
This is the landing stage at Miller Ground Windermere.
In Victorian times Miller Ground was a popular bathing area within the lake for public swimming. There was even a diving board and swimming gala’s were held regularly in the summer months in the lake. Kendal Swimming Club was formed in the 1890’s and lake swimming became very popular.
Troutbeck Bridge Pool was built in 1974 located between Windermere and Ambleside along the A591. This public pool served the communities of Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside and Coniston and all surrounding villages, with so much water around us it’s important that our younger generation learn to swim at an early age and feel comfortable around water. We’re pleased to say that today in 2010 we still teach 750 children to swim every week at Troutbeck Bridge Pool.
Duncan has offerred to keep in touch with his new lake swimming friends from Troutbeck Bridge and help in any way possible in the future to raise the profile of swimming at LIFE at Troutbeck Bridge and safe lakes swimming during the warmer summer months.

LIFE at Troutbeck Bridge

Here’s the Troutbeck Bridge Pool and Sports Hall with the Langdale fells in the background, this is the first blog telling the story of the transformation of the 1970’s pool into a state of the art leisure leisure facility serving the local communities of Windermere and Bowness, Ambleside and Coniston, Staverley and Kendal.

LIFE stands for Lakeland Initiative for Fitness and Excellence and we are a Charity status organisation providing subsidised public swimming facilities for the local community and tourist population visiting South Lakes.

You can visit our web site for details of our facility at www.life-wellbeing.co.uk

We currently have a 25 x 10 metre pool with a 25 station gym and next year we plan to add a new first floor gym and dry side locker rooms and will also upgrade the wet side changing rooms. We will install solar panels on the roof to significantly improve our carbon footprint and reduce our energy costs and we hope to add an indoor climbing centre.

Here is the visual of our new facility
